Hackney is a great place to live, work and visit. It is one of the most vibrant and diverse places in the country with strong, cohesive communities. Our residents come from many different ethnic backgrounds with more than 100 languages spoken here. Hackney Council’s good financial position means that we are able to invest in key services and improve quality of life in the borough for our residents. The Audit Commission recognises Hackney as a council that is improving well. Recent MORI surveys show that Hackney residents and council staff think we are improving too! We are ‘Raising our Game’. Hackney is a host borough for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, at the heart of the most significant regeneration project ever seen in London. We are committed to ensuring the Games leave a lasting positive legacy for Hackney, our communities and businesses well beyond 2012. Part of this legacy is the success we have already had with making the East London Line extension a reality. This will bring the tube to Hackney in time for the Olympics, with three new stations within the borough. Our recent reshaping exercise supports a “one Council” approach to service delivery and strategic planning where all staff make a contribution to improving Hackney and helping the Council achieve its aspiration to become a ‘good’ authority on the road to excellence.
